Cisco IOS Commands Reference

Technical library

Modes and safe observation

Cisco CLI modes distinguish user EXEC, privileged EXEC and configuration context. Commands vary by platform and release. Observe before modifying: inspect interfaces, VLANs and routes, record current state and plan rollback. ITAV supports only its documented educational parser, not arbitrary IOS syntax.

Interface and switching evidence

show ip interface brief summarizes addressing and administrative/protocol status. show interfaces status can expose access membership and link information; show vlan brief lists VLAN/access associations. Real operational interfaces have speed, duplex, counters and negotiated behavior that the teaching engine does not fully reproduce.

Routing and management

show ip route helps identify connected, static and learned prefixes; a default route is fallback, not a replacement for more-specific matching. Management changes can lock out the administrator, so use console/out-of-band access and change control. Save behavior and rollback mechanisms differ across devices.

Reference versus simulator

The examples below are real-world IOS-style reference, not commands executed on the host or automatically applied to this canvas. Use the inspector for simulator configuration. Unsupported console commands explain their limit rather than pretending to alter real routers.

Signal / protocol flow

  1. 1Observe show commands
  2. 2Identify fault
  3. 3Plan change
  4. 4Apply in correct mode
  5. 5Retest / save

Technical terminology

  • EXEC: operational command context
  • Configuration mode: change context
  • Administrative down: intentionally disabled
  • Running configuration: active settings

Worked example

An interface can be administratively up but fail protocol operation in real equipment. Inspect the connected port and configuration, not just one status summary. In ITAV, link status uses enabled and compatible simulated endpoints.

Configuration reference

! Real-world Cisco IOS-style reference only
enable
show ip interface brief
show ip route
configure terminal
interface GigabitEthernet0/0
 ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
 no shutdown
end
! Confirm change and platform save policy before persistence.

Troubleshooting scenario

A pasted command is unsupported in the ITAV console. Use help to see supported diagnostic commands and change the device inspector rather than assuming the command succeeded.

Knowledge check

Which behavior is correct for an unsupported educational console command?
