Cell Overlap & Roaming

Wireless

Networking labs

Overview

Roaming is usually a client decision influenced by RSSI, retries, policy and capabilities. Overlap supports transition, but excessive co-channel overlap wastes airtime. Matching security and network design are needed to preserve sessions; strongest signal is not the only quality metric.

Protocol stages

  1. 1Serving AP
  2. 2Candidate AP
  3. 3Client decision
  4. 4Reassociation
  5. 5Session continuity
